unique late 1930's hand painted and numbered anatomical human eye model comprised of a two part outer eye, retina and vitreous humor and two-part choroid, lens, and cornea. the model is fixed on it's original enameled black wood base or support. the model was built by w.m. welch manufacturing company, a chicago-based company incorporated in 1906. around 1910, welch acquired the edward p. martin company, a manufacturer of science education products , and gradually developed proprietary products for physics, chemistry and biology education. in 1924, with help from dr. henry d. hubbard of the u.s. bureau of standards, welch introduced its "periodic chart of the atoms", recognized as the most comprehensive representation of the mendeleev periodic table. the company later merged with the e.h. sargent co., to become one of the largest suppliers of science education products.
