rare and original largely intact long neck porter-style pint with tapered collar and ring manufactured for john lomax. just below the shoulder is the lomax logo, with four heavily raised bottles, their necks crossing in a diamond configuration around the initials "jal" and surrounded by lettering, "trade / mark / regis / tered". the front body features a clean strike in the form of the heavily embossed logo and lettering beneath, reading "j.a. lomax / charles place / chicago". the reverse is embossed "this / bottle must / be returned" just above the heel. the dark amber glass is mostly uniform throughout, with whittling evident. the ring-neck tapered collar is largely intact though it is chipped in several places along the lip edge. the base is smooth with a round indentation from manufacture with post mold. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including a flat open bubble on the front, and minor surface wear. this bottle was dug in the chicago area, and has not been tumbled, so exhibits some debris or discoloration. john a. lomax entered the bottling operations in 1854, distributing soda water located at 38 w. lake street in chicago. in 1859, the plant was destroyed by fire and operations were moved to a two-story frame building located at 16 charles place. as business grew, john and his son george erected a large masonry building in 1871, which was consumed by the great chicago fire the same year. shortly after, lomax rebuilt an even larger four-story facility that was advertised as being the "largest bottling house in the world.” during their peak production years, lomax serviced more than five thousand of the approximately seven thousand saloons across the city of chicago. their bottling works furnished soda-waters, ginger ale, mineral and spring water, ales and other drinks. the company ceased operations in 1885. measures 8 inches high.
