original and amazingly intact early nineteenth century privy dug diminutive blue aqua glass medicinal jar manufactured for dr. brown's shaker fluid extract of english valerian. the square body has a recessed panel on each slim side, reading "shaker fluid" and "extract valerian" on opposing sides. the front and back panels are free of embossing and exhibit heavy whittling. the short, slim bottle is finished with a short neck and flared lip. this bottle contained a popular medicine compounded by dr. brown, a shaker, in the 1830's. the shakers gave the distributorship rights to edward brinley & co., of boston around 1840. the base features an open pontil. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture. samuel brown developed a method of extracting valerian's essential oil without using heat--which deactivates it--and created a line of medicines for "the cure of nervousness, lowness of spirits, debility, hypochondria, neuralgia, hysteria". the product was heavily advertised, including use of pamphlets, medal competitions, and testimonials from leading physicians, all of which emphasized the shakers' medical and marketing acumen.
