rare mid-nineteenth century privy-dug sapphire hutchinson soda bottle manufactured for jos wolf in milwaukee, wisconsin. the squat body is finished with a blob top and has the characteristic metal internal stopper. the name "jos wolf" and "milwaukee wis" are raised, but caseworn at the high points of the embossed lettering. the base is smooth and flat. “hutchinson’s patent spring stopper” was invented in april 1879. hutchinson’s stopper gained widespread popularity with bottlers and consumers as corks and most other types of external and internal bottle closures were rendered obsolete and hutchinson’s inexpensive internal stoppers became the north american soda bottling industry’s standard closure.
