very rare and and highly sought after original c. 1905-15 city of chicago exterior street sign removed several years ago from the corner of a building's exterior facade located at the corner of van buren and michigan avenue along grant park in the heart of downtown. the long and narrow street sign has been flattened for display purposes. the sign was likely manufactured by the enameled steel co., chicago, il., or possibly the indestructible street sign co., columbus, oh. the oversized city street sign is comprised of heavy gauge die cut steel with a yellow and black porcelain enameled finish. the street sign contains multiple holes used for mounting flush against the building's facade. excellent representation of an early downtown chicago street sign. like most early porcelain enameled signs, the letters are slightly recessed or sunken in relation to the surrounding sheet metal or iron. measures 71 x 8 inches.
