well-executed late 19th century ornamental cast iron residential fireplace gas insert designed and fabricated by the dawson brothers, chicago, ills. the fireplace mantel insert was salvaged from a chicago three-story greystone built around 1898. the cast iron insert retains the original flue and gas handles or keys. the multi-part perforated screen is original and free from damage. the gold enameled finish is mostly uniform throughout.
