original and intact c.early 1870's handblown medium blue aqua soda bottle fabricated for the hayes brothers in chicago, il. the tall slim body and high shoulders are finished with a short neck and applied blobtop. the front body is embossed "hayes bros. / chicago, ill.". a maker's mark is found on the reverse, "l&w" indicating it was made by lorenz & wightman in pittsburgh between 1862-1874. the base itself is smooth with a single central dot, and seams evidence manufacture with a two leaf mold. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture. michael and patrick hayes were chicago soda bottlers who began operations in 1871. prior to this, michael hayes was a tinsmith and patrick hayes worked for fuller & fuller. the latter was likely an important connection for the hayes brothers in starting their bottling business, as fuller & fuller were prominent chicago patent medicine wholesalers and the early hayes brothers product line had an unusual focus on "medicated" waters and "nerve tonic" as well as "therapeutic" alcoholic beverages. during the first decade of the hayes brothers' operation, their address was listed as being the rear of their residence at 812 washington and then 908 carroll (thus the 1870's bottles were produced for a relatively small-scale bottling operation). the brothers made a large leap in the soda and mineral water business in 1882, when they bought the large, well-established hutchinson & sons bottling works at 241 randolph. the sale precipitated w.h. hutchinson & sons focus on manufacturing and distributing hutchinson’s patent spring stoppers, syrups and extracts, and other major components of the bottling process. the hayes brothers operated out of the hutchinson factory from 1883 to 1886. by 1887 michael had left the business entirely and patrick had returned to producing soda water from his current residence at 893 carroll. he then took on a new partner, john j. sullivan, and they began producing soda water under the corporate name "hayes and sullivan". after 1888 the hayes family was no longer bottling soda and mineral water in chicago.
