the bedford steam stone works, bedford, ind.
two matching intact early 20th century salvaged solid limestone exterior standard brewery building or corner saloon roofline corbels or brackets fabricated by the bedford steam stone works, bedford, ind. the visually-striking corbels were originally mounted against a chimney on an east facing exterior wall. the surface patina is largely uniform and has weathered with age. the oversized standard brewery saloon corbels are in good overall condition. the facade ornament was salvaged from the historically-important early 20th century non-extant standard brewery saloon building that has been identified as the only known "tied house" (i.e., exclusively sold and served standard-brand beer bottled and distributed by the standard brewery company (1892-1923) beer. the massive carved indiana limestone built-in rondel with the brewery's name and logo displayed prominently on the corner saloon's facade attests to this. the standard brewery was a pre-prohibition era brewery located in tri-taylor at 2500 west roosevelt road (roosevelt and campbell) and was in operation from 1892 until 1923. the west humboldt park saloon served as a “tied house," a unique retail arrangement to exclusively serve and sell beer produced by standard brewery. one of the most striking features of the rondel is the use of the city's "municipal device," illustrating the importance of the brewing industry to chicago and its surrounding neighborhoods. priced for the pair. 19 x 6 x 19 ( the scroll extends to 19 but the base flush part is 17)
