original and intact 19th century american victorian era patented lever doorknob and backplate designed and fabricated by or for the gilbert lock company, newark, n.j. the the uniquely shaped escutcheon with lever and single keyhole is comprised of cast iron. the doorknob is made of white porcelain with centrally located stamped brass manufacturer mark bearing the letter "g" for gilbert's patent. the knob and escutcheon were designed for mortise locks without the need for a spindle. the knob shank is secured to the escutcheon, which is boxed out sufficiently to allow play for a lugged plate, turning with the shank and acting against a lever. the latter is hinged at the top and fitted with an arm at the bottom which works in a slot through the lock, drawing back the latch by a direct, lateral action. the escutcheon is secured by long screws above and below the lock. there is no spindle to work loose and rattle, no screws in the shank to drop out, and no adjustment of washers or screws, as the knob has a perfect adjustment to any thickness of door without binding. refinished and clear coated. measures approximately 5 x 2 1/4 inches.
