very clean and compact repurposed c. 1950's vintage american industrial low-lying combination coffee table containing a brushed metal "equipto" multi-drawer cabinet designed and fabricated by aurora metal products inc., aurora, il. each and every sliding drawer is equipped with a pressed steel handle and slot for label or placard. the newly added tabletop consists of recycled solid walnut wood accentuated with two oversized and contrasting maple butterfly joints. the cabinet and tabletop have been thoroughly cleaned, refinished and treated with various stains and sealants. the cabinet contains a total of 18 matching sliding drawers. the tabletop is tightly affixed to the steel cabinet. butterfly joints are commonly used either to hold two or more wooden boards together or to keep two halves of a board that have already started to split from splitting further. when used, a negative of the hole is cut out of the board the joint will be placed in and the butterfly is then fitted, keeping the joint together. the wood used for the butterfly is usually a contrasting wood, often a hardwood such as walnut. butterfly joints are common in the work of notable furniture designer george nakashima. they were also used in repairing cracks in tabletops in the 18th century. the "butterfly" was installed on the underside of the tabletop to stabilize a crack. when the butterfly is fitted, it will draw the crack together when pressed in and inhibit further movement of the crack. measures 36 x 14 x 15 inches.
