northern engineering works, detroit, mich.
all original and largely intact early 20th century oversized heavy gauge cold-rolled steel cobalt blue porcelain enameled gantry crane sign or plaque fabricated by or for the northern engineering works, detroit, mich. the single-sided richly colored porcelain or vitreous enameled sign was salvaged from notable chicago foundry electric "traveling" gantry crane shortly before the crane and building housing it are demolished. the cold-rolled steel "northern crane" sign likely was installed between 1915-1930. the bold white lettering is slightly indented (a characteristic of earlier porcelain signage). the sign was mounted flush against the crane'a riveted joint steel hoist. minor loss of porcelain evident, espeically around the mounting holes. the vibrant blue shows very few signs of fading or discoloration. measures 57 x 22 inches.
