all original american antique industrial c. 1876-78 portable iron and sheet steel "strong box" with the original metallic gold and black paint surface finish largely intact. the riveted joint opposed strap hinges and lockable hasps are original and in great working condition. the patent date is lightly stenciled along the right side of the strong box. the opposed bent rod drop handles are comprised of either wrought iron or steel. the exact fabricator is not known. patent information that may lend a clue to the designer and/or manufacturer is pending. the heavily fortified interior with thick, multi-faceted lining retains the original metallic copper finish. the underside of the hinged top contains a badge or plaque that may or may not have contained manufacturer markings. unusual in construction and overall design. measures approximately 14 x 11 x 8 inches.
