herman v. von volst's comed substation still stands, but continues to die a slow death through deferred maintenance

hermann v von holst's southside chicago comed substation (also known as the gaitan building, 1924) is still standing, but the degree of deterioration since the last time i visited at the beginning of 2018 is far worse than i expected.

moisture penetration deeply embedded in exterior walls has caused the facade to buckle in some places. spalling of face brick continues - in various degrees of severity - to spread from one end of the facade to the other. one of holst's signature patterned tile lunettes lays in ruin on the sidewalk enclosed by fence.

if deferred maintenance was employed to ensure it's destruction, then mission accomplished. no need to place a corpse on an any endangered list. another major tear in chicago's urban fabric over greed and/or stupidity.
