original c. 1950's vintage american industrial freestanding diamond mesh factory lunchroom locker unit fabricated by the debourgh mfg. co., minneapolis, mn. the structurally sound and secure locker contains a unique compartment configuration, consisting of two long and narrow units flanked on either side by eight tightly spaced "cubby holes." the compact compartments contain hinged doors with lockable sliding hasps and stamped steel plaques containing lightly incised numbers. the heavy gauge angled iron frame contains all-welded construction. original mint green interior adds a nice contrast against the brushed metal exterior. handles and hinges are fully functional. great overall condition. debourgh was established in 1909 as the “berg brothers” in minneapolis, mn. they were a small sheet metal shop specializing in poultry supplies, roofing, gutters, steel ceilings and light metal works. the business was renamed debourgh manufacturing in the early 1930's. defense work was prevalent during ww ii, and debourgh manufactured struts for the gliders for b24 bombers and rocking rollers for bailey bridges. in 1931, the university of minnesota contacted the berg brothers to have a new locker designed for easy maintenance, ventilation, and security. during the 1950's the "all american locker" gained widespread popularity through a large network of distributors. around this time, debourgh redesigned their locker, patented latching mechanisms and added a variety of sizes and options to the line. this was the beginning of the “all american locker” product still manufactured today. the locker unit measures 36 x 12 x 72 inches.
