all original 1930's vintage american industrial adjustable height factory machine shop bench stool. fabricated by the toledo metal furniture co., toledo, oh. nearly all parts of the chair are comprised of steel, cold rolled and die formed. the base is rigidly braced and has long wearing quality. the braces which make the base rigid are held in place by retainers set inside the "u" shaped legs, so that there is no pivoting motion to weaken the construction. four bolts with large size wing nuts hold the seat and "spider" in the base of the chair. adjustment of height is accomplished by removing the wing nuts and bolts, setting at proper heights and replacing the bolts. no tools are necessary to make this adjustment, which is three inches on each chair by half inch steps. the seat should always be level, which is assured by seeing that the same number of holes appear above or below the brace on each leg of the large steel channel which furnishes the adjustment. the stationary circular seat retains the original weathered and worn wood inset. the steel disc "shoes" are original and intact. brushed metal finish treated with a clear coat lacquer. the toledo metal furniture company, manufacturer of uhl art steel furniture offered to druggists and soda dispensers, factories and offices a line of convenient, durable, economical and serviceable steel furniture. the uhl idea was conceived and the first chair brought into existence through the "sweat of the brows" of the uhl brothers, joe and clem, in a small bicycle repair shop in toledo, several years ago. this first chair when completed, although crude in comparison with the present-day product, proved the idea a success. it at once established the u-shaped formation of cold-rolled steel as the most ingenious method invented for securing in the legs of chairs, stands and tables a maximum of strength with a minimum of weight without any sacrifice of appearance. it proved that the novel patented truss-locking device was a marvel of simplicity and strength. it proved that the uhl "brain-child" was worth a careful bringing up. maximum height 29 1/2 inches.
