largely intact early 20th century vintage medical "pelton" hospital operating room supply cabinet and/or preparation station. dates to 1915-20. salvaged from the old cook county hospital (chicago, il). the freestanding cabinet is comprised largely of heavy gauge steel, cleaned of any and all paint. retains the original white porcelain enameled steel removable top. the nickel-plated steel rail guard remains intact. contains a small swing-out drawer with original faceted glass pulls. the surface mount hinged cabinet door features a rounded corner pane of glass with intact "jumbo" size faceted pressed glass knob pull. manufactured by the pelton & crane co., detroit, mi. measures 33 x 18 x 13 inches. pelton & crane was founded by dr. r.m. pelton, a dentist who felt the need in his own practice for a furnace used to bake porcelain inlays. he called upon a friend, mr. crane, who was an electrical engineer, to help him with the design and construction. the new device worked well. other dentists saw it, were impressed with it, and requested that they be permitted to buy one. these events led to the birth in 1900 of the pelton & crane company in the basement of dr. pelton's home in detroit.
