original c. 1900-15 antique american ornamental stamped brass exterior residential doorknob backplate or escutcheon featuring foliated scrollwork, swag and unusual aquatic creatures. the backplate contains two keyholes (one reserved for the "master" skeleton key). the turned brass thimble or collar is tightly affixed to the backside of the escutcheon plate. nicely aged surface patina. possibly fabricated by reading or lockwood. measures approximately 7 x 2 inches.
