original 19th century american eastlake style ornamental cast brass "oriental" pattern residential entrance door backplate. fabricated between 1885-89 by branford lock works, branford, ct. the enormously popular eastlake pattern enjoyed widespread use in chicago during the 1880's (found especially among victorian brick cottages, three-flats, etc). the backplate contains two keyholes with the "master" retaining the original swinging keyhole cover. black enameled inlay accentuates the detail. the diamond-shaped collar or thimble remains tightly affixed to the backplate. measures approximately 7 3/8 x 2 inches.
