late 19th century original and intact salvaged chicago victorian era ornamental cast iron interior residential fireplace gas insert designed and fabricated by the dawson brothers, chicago, il. the insert contains two oppose pilasters with fluted shafts and decorative capitals. intricate foliage is found above the hood. the perforated ash grate features protruding "serpentine fretwork" with a centrally located slot for the valve key. mostly uniform early metallic gold paint finish. salvaged from a chicago mansion built around 1895.
