original 19th century ornamental cast bronze metal victorian era "doggie" residential doorknob. the doorknob contains lightly incised markings (i.e., maker and patent date respectively) along the shank and backside of the knob. the highly stylized figural doorknob features a wonderfully executed, centrally positioned dog with outstretched paws in sunken relief. the serrated rim with greek style palmettes and anthemions contains wear consistent with age. the highly detailed doorknob was patented by ludwig kreuzinger for the metal compression casting company, boston, ma. the antique doorknob was fabricated by the russell & erwin mfg. co., new britain, ct., between 1870-75.
