all original and nicely aged c. 1870-75 antique american high victorian era interior residential passage door hinge designed and fabricated by the russell & erwin mfg. co., new britain, ct. the pivoting ornamental cast bronze door hinge retains the original detachable cover plates adorning each hinge leaf. the cover plates are fastened against the hinge with two small threaded set screws. the two matching decorative plates were designed to conceal the five screw holes found along each leaf. if that number of screw holes was used in conjunction with cover plates, the design elements would be greatly compromised. in addition, the plates offer maximum visual ornament with little detraction from the existing screw or mounting holes. the two threaded-end tapered steeple-shaped finials are equally stunning in design and execution. the passage door hinge was patented in 1869. likely salvaged from a stately mansion. two matching hinges available in this size. the hinge measures 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches.
