original and intact late 19th century antique american victorian era heavy gauge steel wire "dictionary-stand" designed and patented by la verne w. noyes of chicago, il. the four-legged base is made of twisted and bent steel wire with looped feet. the stand features a "standard" composed of wire sections with portions twisted together form an axial hinge, with upper ends of the wires extending upward to form supports for the book-holder, which opens and closes with spring-loaded hinge plates. the black enameled finish remains largely intact. the book stand dates to around 1898-1905. fabricated by the noyes co., chicago, il. measures 22 x 16 x 30 inches.
