american 19th century original and largely intact black enameled ornamental cast iron interior residential fireplace insert or grate likely fabricated by the peerless mfg. co., louisville, ky. the protruding hood features a centrally located anthemion flanked by intricate leafage. the bottom pierced metal ash grate is free from damage. the gas insert features an unusual patented cast iron back tightly affixed to the ornamental grate. mostly uniform black enameled finish throughout. the gas insert was salvaged from a chicago graystone undergoing demolition. measures 24 1/2 x 30 1/2 x 7 inches.
