james stenson, chicago, il
group of three nearly identical and largely intact chicago privy dug 1870's aqua hutchinson style soda bottles manufactured for chicago bottler james stenson. the squat shoulders and neck are finished with applied blob tops, and one bottle contains a large remnant of the patented hutchinson spring stopper. embossed vertically on the glass is the bottler's name, abbreviated to read "jas stenson". surface wear and discoloration from being buried are evident, with one bottle having significantly less haze than the other two. crudities are consistent with age and date of manufacture, including casewear on the embossing, stretch marks and bubbles. according to an 1876 lakeside annual city directory, james stenson manufactured soda water at 99 west monroe, the address that had previously housed the adam amberg & green mineral bottling works in the late 1860s, and the arnold & green spruce beer bottling works in the early 1860s. stenson was known to have a short-lived business partnership with john amberg from 1869-70. priced for the lot of three, but will separate.
