the art deco style "machine age" signs were designed by numerous manufacturers, but identifying them has proved to be somewhat challenging at times.

the great majority of glass globes, fashioned in ruby red, "milk" glass or emerald green, were fabricated by the kopp glass company, pittsburgh, pa. the globes and wedge-shaped shades were outfitted with giant block lettering that was either baked-on enamel or etched and/or embossed and then enameled.

over the years urban remains has acquired a sizable selection of informational signs from theaters, commercial buildings and a large collection from the new york city subway. the "pictorial" lounge signs are especially interesting and seldom found.
