urban remains secures iconic depression era porcelain enameled neon exterior cedar hotel signs

with virtually little notice and very little preparation, urban remains was given a very small window of time to secure two iconic depression era neon signs the hung (one against the facade and the other atop a signpost) from the historic cedar hotel, constructed in 1928 by architects rissman and hirschfield (the architects designed the knickerbocker hotel on west walton).

more information pertaining to the history of the 4-story single occupant hotel and the neon signs will be posted shortly.

the polychromatic double-sided porcelain or vitreous enameled steel exterior facade sign was taken down shortly after we had completed unloading the first in our warehouse. we quickly made our way back and safely secured the second sign. both signs now reside in the urban remains showroom, where they will undergo restoration.

the crew from chicago-based taylor wrecking and excavating did a remarkable job extracting the signs from the building for us to quickly load and bring them into safe hands.

more to follow.
