bldg. 51 museum hosts iit's college of architecture phd program student field trip

i was honored that students and faculty from the illinois institute of technology's school of architecture phd program chose to visit the bldg. 51 museum for their field trip in january of 2018. the extensive tour was a great opportunity to view and discuss historically important "chicago school" artifacts (some on display were salvaged several decades ago by former iit alumni, including richard nickel and john vinci) salvaged from demolished or heavily altered buildings across the city.

i hope the field trip will lead to future collaborations between iit and bldg. 51, including the possibility of erecting exhibits at crown hall pertaining to the display of architectural ornament tied to historic narratives that educate students interested in the history of chicago's architecture.

the school of architecture is housed in the illinois institute of technology's crown hall (1956), built by architect ludwig mies van der rohe. image courtesy of eric j. nordstrom.
