out with the old, in with the new: two single-story 19th century chicago workers cottages faced with demolition

one of two 19th century single-story brick workers cottages on race street (formerly known as emerson street) is set to be destroyed in the coming weeks. the boarded cottage with unornamented joliet limestone block headers, oculus window, and turned wood porch columns is located just west of the first, and will likely be next on the chopping block this summer.
i haven's looked at sanborns yet, but i wouldn't be surprised if the cottages were part of a larger development of similar homes built by the same developer sometime in the late 19th century.
a modern day developer has virtually stripped the historic character of the block and neighborhood by rapid demolition and construction of several new homes on the same street - all just a stone's throw away from the cottage facing demolition. i've included an image of the new wave of homes sweeping the neighborhood for comparison.
i get that these houses are not historic "gems," but workers cottages are still widely overlooked and need to be documented, espeically if they haven't been terribly remuddled.
