vanishing cityscape: wreckers take down two post-fire 1870s chicago cottages in single week

the first story facade is all that remains of the huron street cottage built around 1887 (as discussed in a previous post below).

TWO-STORY 1880'S HURON STREET BRICK CHICAGO WORKERS COTTAGE WITH JOLIET LIMESTONE WINDOW HOODS SET TO BE DEMOLISHED IN COMING DAYS

from a previous post on may 2, 2019: yet another 1880s two-story residential brick cottage located in chicago's west town neighborhood will be reduced to rubble by the end of the week.
according to an 1887 city directory, arthur heun, a draughtman, resided there, located at 334 huron steet.

the 19th century brick residence features lightly incised joliet limestone window hoods, double arch top attic window, and partially intact painted pined wood cornice. the fret-sawn brackets appear to have been removed long ago, perhaps when the joliet stone was painted over.
with the green fence wrapped around the house and wrecking machine parked in back, it might be gone by tomorrow.

i photographed this two-story brick cottage with bracketed with original bracketed wood cornice and oculus at the same time a cottage across the street was targeted for demolition a few weeks ago.
i documented it knowing/fearing it was only a matter of time before it would share the same fate as its neighbor across the street, since the developer's sign posted in front was an invitation to buy, destroy and rebuild bigger - much bigger - given the newly-built mega-mansions surrounding it.

looking at my lakside directories, i found cabinet maker william kroeber living there in 1874. two years later, the house was occupied by widow rebecca dundore.
i didn't expect the cottage to be dropped on the chopping block so quickly, but with a demolition permit issued the other day, i will have to return to document further.

farewell.
