there is a great deal of facade restoration work being done on downtown chicago's late 19th and early 20th century buildings this year, including, but not limited to, chicago tribune tower (howells and hood, 1925), marquette building (holabird and roche, 1895), cook county hospital ( paul gerhardt with schmidt, garden, and martin as supervising architects, 1914), jewelers building (joachim g. giaver and frederick p. dinkelberg, 1928), chicago public library ( shepley, rutan and coolidge , 1897), and s.a. maxwell loft building (adler and sullivan, 1881). i've been repeatedly documenting progress made on my well-established "circuit" with continuation of some projects (e.g., tribune tower) lasting years now.
when making the rounds earlier this week i noticed a swing-stage hanging from burnham and root's rookery building (1885). i pulled over to begin shooting with my camera, when i quickly realized this could be a large-scale project given the fact that scaffolding had already been erected along the building's main entrance (west facade).
i had very limited time, so i took very few photographs, but i will surely return as work progresses.
