another 19th century multi-story victorian-era chicago brick residence on mohawk set to be demolished this week

another well-maintained 19th century brick and lemont limestone boarding house located at 1733 n. mohawk will be demolished by the end of the week. the historic structure, erected during chicago's 1880s "building boom," became an instant casualty after developers secured the house and adjacent lot to pave way for a double-lot megamansion that will quickly replace it.
while the house's interior was heavily modified over the years to accommodate contemporary living, the exterior, or rather facade, remained largely unaltered since the time it was constructed in the late 1870s. an 1886 sanborn insurance map shows it as one of only a few masonry structures surrounded by several wood cottages lining mohawk street.
after briefly surveying the surrounding houses in the neighborhood, i was deeply saddened by the shear magnitude of rapid transformation, leaving nearly all of the neighborhood's historic integrity wiped clean from the map - replaced with a seemingly endless multitude of newly-built mansions devoid of any distinction or character.

note: i've included additional images (iphone) taken a few days later after the fence arrived and workers had cleared most of the adjoining lot. i will try to circle back in the next day or two with images of its destruction.
