destruction of adler and sullivan's charles p. kimball house as documented by richard nickel

the following images - digitized, enlarged, and edited from richard nickel contact sheets housed in the richard nickel committee archive at the ryerson and burnham library, art institute of chicago, were taken by richard nickel of the charles p. kimball house during its demolition in 1964 by aball wrecking. negotiations for the ornament were handled by jack randall and richard nickel on behalf of  southern illinois university edwardsville. 

the three-story  masonry structure was designed and built by the architectural firm of adler and sullivan in 1882 for charles p. kimball of kimball brothers, a prominent 19th century company in carriage house manufacturing. the house was completed at a cost of 45, 000 dollars.

in addition to documenting the house's untimely death, nickel managed to save the two sullivan-designed granite and sandstone columns and the roofline pediment - now on display at lovejoy library at the university of southern Illinois edwardsville (the last two color images were taken in the summer of 2018 when john vinci and i paid a visit to the nickel collection.
