original fully documented late 1920's antique american ornamental wrought iron spanish revival style interior vestibule door oversized handle or double cross bar possibly fabricated by the f.p. smith wire & iron works, chicago, il. a limited number of these stylized handles were removed from the lobby vestibule doors prior to demolition in the mid-1980's. the capitol door artifact has been brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. great overall condition. the non-extant or demolished capitol theater was designed in 1928-29 by notable architect john eberson, who pioneered the "atmospheric" style theaters or movie palaces during the great depression. although eberson designed several theaters across the country, only three chicago theaters are tied to his name, which in addition to the capitol, were the paradise (demolished) and the avalon. the opulent far south side chicago movie palace contained a richly ornamented auditorium designed to resemble an ancient roman villa accentuated with statuary figures and diminutive temples concealing the organ grilles. the massive theater lobby was bedecked in stunning cast plaster greco-roman reliefs, additional full-figured statues and an elaborate mosaic tile floor. both the auditorium and grand lobby contained a dark blue "starlit" sky. the capitol theater shared a similar design with eberson's majestic theater, built two years prior. the capitol was originally built for thee coonley brothers circuit for stage acts and movies. the theater closed its doors in 1974 and after years of neglect and decay, was brought down by the wrecking ball in 1985. to this day, the site remains any empty lot. 9 inches x 30 1/2 inches.
