heavily reinforced c. 1950's american penitentiary cell desk comprised of all-welded joint heavy gauge cold-rolled steel. the stationary chicago cook county prison desk was likely fabricated by the stewart iron works, convington, ky. the desk contains a compartmentalized module for storage of personal articles. the distinctive integrated swing-out stool seat contains a reinforced pivoting bracket, supporting a tightly affixed pressed and folded circular-shaped seat. the horizontal angled steel stretcher doubles as a footrest. the jail desk retains the original gun metal gray enameled finish. the institutional desk was originally bolted against the floor and wall of a 6 x 8 prison cell. salvaged from the maryland penitentiary, baltimore, md.
