antique american late 19th century railroad passenger car interior "saloon lock" with a nicely aged surface patina. comprised largely of cast bronze metal with interior cast iron components. manufactured by the adams & westlake or "adlake" of chicago, il. the fanciful bulbous-shaped "shankless" doorknob remains in working condition. the adams & westlake co. the adams & westlake was founded in 1857 in chicago, illinois. in the beginning, they began manufacturing and selling railroad supplies and hardware. with the opening of the american west and expansion of the railroads, the company prospered and diversified. within 45 years, adlake became one of the largest suppliers of equipment to the transportation industry in the world. in 1927, adlake relocated to its present site in elkhart, indiana. privacy latch and bolts original and intact. measures approximately 6 x 4 inches.
