early 20th century refinished antique american industrial joesph uhl-designed "perfection" office and/or ice cream parlor chairs fabricated by the toledo metal furniture co., toledo, oh. the "uhl art steel" four-legged chair contains a mostly uniform darkened brushed steel finish with traces of the original copper-plated finish evident. the exposed metal has been sealed with a clear coat lacquer. the versatile chair has folded riveted joint steel frames, consisting of metal strips folded over and molded into a heart-shape, which flares outward to join the seats. there are four cabriole legs made of the same folded steel bolted to the circular seat frames. three strips of steel, pinched together in the center and flaring above and below, form the splats. the black enameled seat is comprised of a thin wood inset and is original to the chair. the chair is often identified as the uhl art steel "perfection" chair, number 151. the toledo metal furniture company, manufacturer of uhl art steel furniture offered to druggists and soda dispensers, factories and offices a line of convenient, durable, economical and serviceable steel furniture. the uhl idea was conceived and the first chair brought into existence through the "sweat of the brows" of the uhl brothers, joe and clem, in a small bicycle repair shop in toledo, several years ago. this first chair when completed, although crude in comparison with the present-day product, proved the idea a success. it at once established the u-shaped formation of cold-rolled steel as the most ingenious method invented for securing in the legs of chairs, stands and tables a maximum of strength with a minimum of weight without any sacrifice of appearance. it proved that the novel patented truss-locking device was a marvel of simplicity and strength. it proved that the uhl "brain-child" was worth a careful bringing up. measures 18 x 14 x 34 inches, and 18 inches high from seat to floor.
