c. 1900-1910 original solid clear glass advertising and/or salesman sample paperweight likely designed and fabricated by the macbeth-evans glass company. the antique american paperweight retains the original enameled back featuring a standing glassblower with blowpipe. the manufacturer's name and location is printed above the glassmith. macbeth-evans was formed in 1899 by the merger of two independent glass companies - one founded in 1869 by thomas evans and the other company established by george a. macbeth in 1872. the introduction of new glass-blowing machines, techniques, etc. during the early 20th century were employed to expand and revolutionize their business, which lead macbeth-evans to become one of the leading contenders in the production of illumination, scientific, and industrial glassware. the original plant was located in charleroi, pennsylvania. due to increased production and/or demand, other plants were opened in marion indiana, bethevan indiana, elwood indiana, and toledo ohio. in 1937 macbeth-evans was purchased by corning glass works of corning new york. macbeth-evans continued to produce the glassware they were famous for under the name macbeth-evans division of corning glass works until sometime in the 1940's.
