early 1940's world war ii weathered and worn united states military "jungle" first aid painted wood box manufactured and assembled by the george w. luft co., inc., long island city, new york. the jungle first-aid kit (developed in the early 1940's), was designed for military aircraft flying over jungle areas. the kit was specially designed for use in tropical areas, and contained a number of items specifically for use in the jungle. typical products included, but not limited to, insect repellent, atabrine tablet (precaution against malaria), water-purifying tablets, salt tablets (prevent the adverse effects of heat and sweating), a snake-bite kit, and sulfaguanidine (treat dysentery). the hand-painted first aid chest retains the original steel hinges and locking clasps. the encircled caduceus insignia remains in excellent condition. features a compartmentalized interior consisting of stationary wood dividers. contents lost long ago.
