oversized elaborately designed ornamental cast iron exterior door mailslot. salvaged from a 19th century brick office building located within the old pabst brewery complex (milwaukee, wi.). the antique american mail slot likely dates to 1885-90. possibly manufactured by the sargent hardware company, new haven, ct. the large hinged cast iron flap contains the word "mail" in fanciful embossed lettering. the large opening is especially useful newspapers and small packages. two matching mail slots were removed from the brewery complex. item measures 3 7/8" x 11"w. opening measures 2"h x 8 1/8"w.
