appleton electric co., chicago, il.
very unique and hard to find c. 1920's vintage industrial machine shop early electric "reelite" drop-down lamp with fully intact green porcelain enameled shallow bowl reflector comprised of cold-rolled steel. the heavy gauge refinished steel reel case has a base for attaching to any 3 inch outlet box or directly to the ceiling. original heavily insulated rubber-coated portable lamp cord. the lamp is adjusted by a raising or lowering operation, similar to the performance of an ordinary window curtain. contains a heavy duty harvey hubbell utility pull-chain socket with plug receptacle. the reelite was originally manufactured by the anderson electric specialty co., prior to being bought out by appleton. the "reelite" is a flexible electric lighting device with automatic spring cord reel. it was originally furnished in three types (i.e., drop cord, portable, and machine tool), for use in industrial and commercial lighting installations. the lamp was specially adapted for use in machine shops, foundries, garages warehouses, libraries, etc. the appleton (formally anderson) "reelite" permits instant adjustment of the light source to its proper distance from the area of work, providing a more effective and concentrated illumination. standard metal reflectors or bulb guards were recommended for use with the drop cord type reelite to meet the requirements of the service for which they were intended. cord measures approximately 28 feet.
