original ornamental cast iron and brass plymouth building newel post designed by architect simeon b. eisendrath and executed by the winslow brothers, chicago, ills. the historically significant gothic style plymouth building is an eleven-story, steel frame structure with a terra cotta and masonry exterior. the manhattan building is built against its southern wall and the old colony building the northern wall. the exterior terra cotta was fabricated by the northwestern terra cotta company chicago, ills. with the exception of the later top-floor addition and missing pressed metal cornice (the building was heavily modified in 1945), the plymouth court elevation retains the original 1899 design for the building. the ornamental cast iron panels adorning the first and second floors reveal the influence of the building’s architect, simeon b. eisendrath’s former employer, louis sullivan, with their low-relief organic executed in the "sullivanesque" style. the interior and exterior ironwork was fabricated by the winslow brothers foundry, an important chicago-based firm that crafted made cast iron for several chicago landmarks including the rookery, the auditorium, building, the carson, pirie, scott and company building, the marquette building, and the monadnock building.
