single historically important all original and unaltered vintage american oversized flush mount a. finkl & sons foundry administration office building exterior facade plaque or sign possibly fabricated in-house by finkl. the very clean and simplistic building sign is comprised of stainless steel and baked-on blue enameled paint over metal. the diamond-shaped sign with a large letter "f" for finkl is the company's official logo or emblem. the designer is not known. the giant-sized sign was originally mounted flush against the administration building's granite facade. stainless steel lettering and mid-century furniture from the president's office were salvaged from the building shortly before it was demolished in the spring of 2015. the finkl foundry sign remains in good condition, with surface wear consistent with age and prolonged exposure to the elements. two signs were salvaged, with the other added to the bldg. 51 museum collection. a. finkl & sons co. was founded in 1879 when german immigrant anton finkl developed a new kind of chisel to clean bricks from buildings destroyed in the great chicago fire. in 1902, the company moved to chicago's near north side. beginning in 2015, the former finkl foundry complex was demolished.
