all original late 19th century refinished ornamental cast iron wall-mount figural match stick holder featuring an intricately designed depiction of the greek god dionysus. the top portion is heavily adorned with detailed pierced metal grape leafage, with central opening for mounting against the wall. the original match holders were offered in a variety of finishes. the one depicted above, originally contained a baked black enameled finish. the detachable backplate is comprised of solid brass. remarkable casting detail throughout. often found near gas stoves and/or fireplaces. refinished and treated with a clear coat lacquer. attributed to the edward f. caldwell co., new york city. measures 5 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches.
