original c. 1930 oversized ornamental cast iron neoclassical style tie rod rosette or plaque salvaged from the facade of the non-extant calumet theater (hammond, ind.), demolished in december of 2011. the solid steel tie rod or bolt with eyelet was originally mounted in the central opening of the rosette. the high tensile strength steel chain links were used (in part) to support the projecting marquee sign mounted above the sidewalk. the theater building contained only two anchored tie rods with rosettes. the foundry/fabricator is not known. the calumet theater was designed by architect lewis hess with charles n. scott as general contractor or builder. both the cornerstone and facade identify the building owner as h. p. downey. the small venue was built in the art deco or moderne style, with a facade clad in ornamental limestone and a centrally located illuminated marquee positioned above the ticket booth. the two sets of entrance doors are flanked by curvaceous, streamlined style curtain walls containing oversized poster display cases set into the wall. the depilated theater was demolished in december of 2011 after decades of neglect. the rosette, tie rod and chain links contain a mostly brushed steel finish. priced for the assembly as depicted in the image above.
