very rare and seldom found late 1930's all original brightly colored polychromatic porcelain or vitreous enameled die cut steel exterior single-sided circular-shaped oversized entrance sign salvaged from the fairyland amusement park located on old route 66 at 40th and harlem ave., lyons, il. the visually striking porcelain enameled amusement park sign sign features a cheerful clown face against a yellow background. the festive red, white and blue half-circle border contains socket holes originally outfitted with low-wattage, incandescent "blinking" colored light bulbs. the non-extant fairyland amusement park opened around 1938 and closed in 1978. a zayre (now marshalls) department store now occupies the site. there were only a limited number of signs mounted back-to-back on poles flanking the arched amusement park entrance. the few other existing signs are held in private collections. the porcelain enamel remains largely intact with surface wear and/or discoloration evident. possibly fabricated by burdick or the veribrite sign company (bother operated in chicago). measures 48 inches in diameter. exceptional in color and graphics. urban remains has had a total of three at one point, with this particular sign being the last.
