very unique and visually striking original 19th century antique french rococo style interior residential cast iron fireplace mantel with matching shelf. the exact fabricator or foundry is not known. likely manufactured in paris, france. the highly ornamented louis xv style mantel was salvaged from a notable guilded age non-extant chicago townhouse located in the gold coast historic district. several similar mantels (see additional listings) likely made by the same fabricator, were removed from neighboring residences constructed in nearly identical fashion. the mantel features a florid surround accentuated with deeply embossed winged cherubs flanking a mythical dragon with long and curvaceous tail. the original detachable beveled edge shelf is completely intact. the metallic gold enameled finish is mostly uniform throughout. the mantel measures 38 x 37 1/2 inches, and the opening measures approximately 17 x 22 inches.
