single antique late nineteenth century blue aqua lightly irridized glass "jettine" shoe polish bottle fabricated for chicago based industrial manufacturers, martells blacking company. the short, square bottle features beveled edges and panels on all four sides that round at the shoulder. the front body is embossed vertically in a worn lettering with crude spacing, "jettine / martells blacking co / chicago". the smooth base exhibits a round, shallow indentation and seams evidence manufacture with a keyed hinge mold. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including allover whittling and irridization. the martell's standard blacking co. was established in 1875 by owel, holden & co. and operated at nos. 403 and 405 fifth avenue. the company manufactured industrial goods in many varieties, including shoe dressings and polish, rubber cement, inks, french chalk, machine oil, and soaps and oil for leather and harnesses. measures 5 1/4 inches high.
