original 19th century american victorian era ornamental cast iron metallic gold enameled interior residential fireplace grate or gas insert designed and patented by w.l. sharp & son, steubenville, oh. the detachable perforated summer cover with foliated scrollwork conceals the closely spaced horizontal rows of gas jets. the stationary grille directly below the summer cover or front features two opposed winged dragons or mythical creatures flanking a highly ornate urn. the multi-faceted protruding hood is original and intact. the ash grille or screen is free from damage. the gas insert was salvaged from a chicago graystone constructed around 1896. measures 24 1/2 x 30 inches.
