single all original late nineteenth century amber glass medicine style bottle of "peptonized beef" manufactured in chicago, il. the square body is embossed on the front with the company name and city, "rose's / peptonized / beef / chicago" with first and last lines curving toward center. the reverse is embossed "sole agents / chapman / green & co / manufacturing / chemists / chicago." the squat body has a short, wide bore finished with a single bead collar. the diminutive container features appealing crudity, including asymmetry, some whittling, and a deep indentation on the embossed body of the glass. irridization and minor surface wear are typical of its age and date of manufacture. rose's product was advertised to contain nearly five pounds of fresh, lean beef in the form of a heavy syrup, priced at one dollar per pound. preston b. rose graduated from the university of michigan in 1862 and worked for the school as an assitant chemistry instructor during the following decade. after fighting in the civil war, preston returned to ann arbor and took on work exposing worthless patent medicines with the washtenaw county medical society. preston became involved in a scandal at the school for embezzling money and temporarily moved to chicago. there he used his chemistry knoweldge to concoct a new health elixir, that was advertised in physician and surgeon magazine as early as 1885. in 1886, he filed another patent for a "food compound," that salvaged nutritional value from the wastewater in meat rendering tanks that produced lard, tallow or other fats. in the 1890's peptonized beef was mixed with ale by another manufacturer as a medicinal food product said to contain concentrated nutritional elements that would aid digestion as well as blood and muscle health. being soluble, it diffused throughout the body system, and was meant to be used by dyspeptics, and in reestablishing strength in the sick.
