original and largely intact c. 1936 natural beige clay, with red slip glaze, ornamental terra cotta upper cornice panel salvaged from the non-extant thomas a. edison school located at calumet avenue and 170th street in hammond, indiana. the "sullivanesque" panel features an impressive combination of strongly geometric design motifs intertwined with intricate organic leafage. the exterior terra cotta panel was fabricated by the midland terra cotta company, chicago, il. the school's principal architect was william hutton, with george grant elmslie as lead designer. the clay modeler was fritz albert. surface wear evident. backside cavities free from brick and mortar. measures 30 x 13 x 4 inches.
